Mindful Musings #181

Mindful Musings

I never thought myself an addict

Until I realized

Not a day can go by

Without me

The pale beige liquid

Of either a warm decaf vanilla latté

Or a sweet decaf tea,

The same brand my grandmother used,

So that it washes me in warmth

And love.

Perhaps I am addicted

To this morning ritual of

Mindful Musings #128

Mindful Musings

Like a hit of heroin

Like a blast of cocaine

The caffeine burns my tongue and scorches my throat

As it courses down my throat into my belly.

Patiently I wait

For the sweet drug

To be broken down

And flood my veins.

Washing over my entire body

Like an island during a tsunami

I feel awake

I feel alive.

Mindful Musings #24

Mindful Musings

The lights are off

And no one is home.

I creep through the halls

Towards my own box.

I flip the switch and the room is illuminated

I creep down darker halls

Towards a coffee machine that has yet to be started.

I don’t even drink coffee,

But I’ll start it for those sleepy people

Who are soon to follow me

Through these halls of darkness.

Good Morning Starshine

The Earth says hello!

Our administrative assistant/superwoman is out of the office today. She was out yesterday as well as the sickness has finally gripped her. I do feel a little bad about it because it seems like she’s got the version of the illness I had.

They’ve been calling my office-mate/brain-sharer and I the ‘Toxic Twins’ which is quite funny.

Since our Superwoman is out of the office I made coffee for everyone. I’m generally here first, and even though I don’t even drink coffee myself, I know my co-workers really enjoy being able to have a hot cup first thing in the morning. We have meetings this morning too that we need to get through. For some of them, being able to do that uncaffienated is frightening. But the pot is on the brew so there’s nothing to fear now.

I have my thermos of tea, as usual, so all is right in my world. It’s nice and warm and lovely.

It snowed last night which has made things interesting so early in the day. Even though I live in freaking Canada and we have snow like, 6 months out of the year, people will still forget how to drive and it will take ages to get anywhere. It’s pretty funny because I now live in a relatively small town so instead of 5 minutes to get somewhere it takes 10.

Not much work has been done on TAK while I’ve been sick. Since we got the notification that the money is on its way, I’ve been dreaming of redoing my office at home and getting things organized and set up the way I like. Since my husband wants a new computer that means I get his old one. My current laptop is less than wonderful. It’s died one too many times. I can’t even have it unplugged because the battery won’t hold a charge.

Hopefully this means that soon I will be able to give you all either another short, or an actual book!

Have a happy Wednesday! The Work Week is almost over! That is, if you work Monday-Friday.

Tea Rules My Morning

Do you have a morning drink? A lot of people I know have to have some sort of beverage in the morning to set off their day right. Most people drink coffee, some people drink an energy drink or a protein shake. Like a lot of other people, I need to drink tea. I have a thermos that I got from Japan that keeps my tea insulated and warm all day. The tea is made at 6:30am or so and is kept warm until I finish it. Sometimes I don’t finish my tea until the afternoon and it’s still warm. I love this thing. It’s by a company called Zojirushi and it’s my favourite purchase.

I generally don’t function properly until I’ve had my tea. I don’t need to drink it all, but I need to drink most of it. Tea has always been very big in my family. We’re Anglo Indian, which just means that we are Indian with British blood mixed in. My family ranges in shades from white to deep brown. I’m around a beige. I get very offended when people call me white. I don’t see myself that way. I prefer to say “I’m not white, I’m beige!”

My grandparents were born and raised in India before they moved to England where my mother was born. But because we have British blood there are a lot of British things we do. Tea is not only a British thing, but it was for my grandparents. There was always a pot of tea on, and as a grandchild it was my duty to serve it to my elders. Aunts, Uncles, my grandparents, parents; we grandchildren had the obligation to do this at family gatherings.

I get very particular about certain foodstuffs because of this. There is only one brand of basmati rice that I will buy and eat, simply for the fact that my grandparents used it. If I could find the tea my grandparents bought, I would. I might have to look online because my usual grocery store doesn’t carry it. They did at one point, and then stopped. There are some Indian foods I can’t eat because my grandmother would have made them in a different way. If it’s not the same, it’s hard to enjoy it.

I was thinking about these things when I was doing some behind the scenes character development for Brexton. I feel like he is a coffee guy; like he needs a warm cup on a regular basis to function. Aldric I think will drink coffee, but he will prefer tea in the end. He has more patience than Brexton. Edessa also would like tea but Gavin and Raelin are coffee people. Vaughn is also a coffee person but Evaristus could go either way. Kokoro and Lot are coffee people. They don’t have the luxury of waiting for tea. They need that caffeine boost to get them through the day.

Will any of this come up in the book? Maybe. I’ve written a part where they’ve woken up and shared a coffee, but now I’m thinking of rewriting that now that I know more about my characters. I’m also thinking of the vessel people will drink from. I feel like Aldric would drink from a cup and saucer if he was offered, but I’m not sure if that would be his vessel of choice. He is very concerned about his appearance so he might opt for a mug. But we’ll see. I’ll get back in there and write the damn thing. We’ll see where it takes me.

Nice, Long, Sigh

I had a great night last night! I met up with a friend for dinner. She came and picked me up and treated me to supper at a restaurant in town that wasn’t McDonalds! We had a great chat about a bunch of the stuff I’m dealing with right now and the stuff she’s dealing with right now. It’s really nice and amazing to have someone that you can talk to so openly who is real with you. When we talked to each other we don’t sugar-coat, we don’t try to tip-toe around the other. If I’m doing something stupid, she tells me straight out. If she’s doing something stupid, I tell her straight out. There’s no malice in our words so we’re able to be honest with each other without worrying about hurt feelings.

After like, 2 hours at the restaurant we were about to leave when I ran into my Boss and fellow Ninja from work! They had met up since my Boss is in town so they invited us to sit with them and we remained for like, another 2 hours. I really needed that. My friend and I  generally try to have a ‘date’ once a week or every two weeks but it had been a while due to our lives being busy, the weather and other stuff.

It was after sitting with my co-workers with an ‘outsider’ that I realized I have it really damn good with my Day Job. I share an office with someone who listens to me bitch and is understanding. That fellow Ninja is amazing in her own right! She knows this job so well it’s amazing. It’s easy to ask her for direction or guidance and I appreciate that. Then there’s the other Ninja that I saw last night. He’s a bit more senior than I am (if you’re reading this, I will call you Senpai from now on instead of Shonen) since he’s been here longer but man. He’s hella successful for a young guy. He’s got his Master’s, he’s working this entry level job which could lead him to amazing professional opportunities and he teaches for the University as well. He’s also wicked intelligent and pretty funny. Then there’s my Boss (who apparently is also a Power Ranger) who is just relaxed and fun but is able to keep us all in line and help us deliver awesome results. There are so many amazing people that I work with that I would be here all day talking about them. It’s just such a chill, professional and awesome environment that I appreciate being able to work here.

It was also revealed to me last night that my in-laws are picking up my eldest on Friday and taking him for the night! That will give all of us a nice needed break. We’ll have to put the tree up on Saturday when my son gets back. My in-laws are also great people. I got really lucky on the draw there. A lot of people hate their in-laws or their in-laws hate them. I don’t have this issue. Or if they do dislike me, they hide it really well hahaha.

I’m feeling refreshed and happy again. Things are starting to look up!
